A Gantt chart is a certain type of bar chart. This type of chart was developed for the reason of keeping up with a project scheduled. Gantt charts show the time a project starts to the time a project ends. These charts show a percentage of the project being completed by shadowing in that area. When these charts were first introduced they were considered advanced and unique for their time. These charts are great to help keep your project planning and project management organized. Information technology representatives use the Gantt chart to represent data collected.
Gantt Chart Overview
Similar charts had been created as far back as 1896 by Karol Adamiecki, these similar charts were once referred to as “harmonograms”. His similar chart was not published to the population until 1931. However this caused a challenge, Karol Adamieki was from Poland and the charts were printed in polish. However in 1910 Gantt was the first one to illustrate this type of bar graph. This bar chart was named of Henry Gantt. Henry Gantt was awarded a medal for his achievements. These charts were first used during World War I. In the 1980’s the gantt chart was introduced to personal computers. In the 1990’s with the introduction of the internet, gantt charts became more popular with wide spread use.
Just with any application or invention this bar graph had its positives and negatives. Gantt charts are a good invention for small projects with a single page view, however it can become hectic and hard to understand if your using this type of chart for larger more detailed projects. Gantt charts usually only represent the cost, time and scope of the project. These charts are great for gaining time management skills for your project.
Gantt Chart in Project Planning
Organization is the key to completing a scheduled project on time, its especially difficult to handle a project if multiple teams are involved. When multiple teams are involved in one project at different times, its important to make sure everyone knows the project plan and using a Gantt chart can make this task a lot less confusing. Using a Gantt chart is also an effective way to communicate between teams. Gantt charts are a great tool to use in multiple aspects of a project, these bar graphs are not to make the project seem more complicated, there used to simplify the project.
Managing projects is not a simply task and without a source of organization is doomed to fail. A Gantt chart will illustrate the steps of a project in an easy to understand picture. Gantt charts have the ability to be broken down to understand them further by breaking down the structures, relating work of one team to another, scheduling what is to be done on a certain day through the entire length of the project and allows you to use your critical thinking skills.
Using Gantt Chart for Project Scheduling
Before you can assemble a Gantt chart you’ll need to have all the information on hand. Its best to make a chart organizing the information before you try to put it into a Gantt bar graph. Putting the graph together with this method allows you to understand the project plan along with others. If your making a Gantt chart from scratch it maybe a little confusing at first. You’ll need to create a horizontal axis to show the time. You can then determine if you’ll go by days or weeks in your chart. On the left hand side of the page, input the number of task needed to complete your project. With each task you’ll need to allow a certain amount of time to allow the task to become completed. For each task a bar will be needed and this bar will extend to the right to show you how long it took to complete that certain task.
There a pro’s and con’s to anything. Gantt charts handle small projects well but if it comes to projects larger then one page its becomes very difficult to understand. Gantt charts are also good at showing time management skills, start dates and end dates. Gantt bar graphs continue to be helpful in the workforce.
